The long-rumored Roy Jones Jr./Joe Calzaghe battle was confirmed today as the world's former best pound-for-pound fighter will take on the (insert random organization here) light heavyweight champion on September 20th at Madison Square Garden. Of course, the fight will be on PPV.
The undefeated Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs) will likely retire after the Jones fight after winning the title over Bernard Hopkins in April. Jones was last seen dispatching Felix Trinidad to up his record to 52-4 with 38 knockouts in January, but has no intentions of hanging them up after the fight, saying he is looking to move up to challenge heavyweight champion Samuel Peter.
Jones told ESPN, "They call Samuel Peter 'The Nightmare,'" Jones said. "I'll give him a nightmare. I like to do stuff people think I can't do. But I am really looking forward to fighting Joe first."
Almost three years after losing three straight fights (two to Antonio Tarver and another to Glen Johnson), it looks like Roy Jones Jr. isn't done fighting anytime soon.
