Thiago Alves didn't make weight and used it to his advantage, knocking out Matt Hughes in the second round of their 175-pound catchweight fight Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London.
A jacked-up Alves caught Hughes with a big knee strike which did in the former champ, the impact of which caused him to collapse all his weight on his own knee, most likely injuring it. Alves was in control for the duration of the fight, bloodying Hughes early with ground-and-pound. We might be seeing the end of one great career for Hughes and the real start of another one for Alves.
Mike Bisping dominated Jason Day in a lackluster co-main event as "The Count" scored a 1st round win via rep stoppage as Day wasn't defending himself against any Bisping punches. I don't know what we learned here as Day looked tremendously overmatched.
In other matches:
-Mike Swick won a unanimous decision over Marcus Davis.
-Thales Leites won a split decision over Nate Marquardt.
-Fabricio Werdum defeated Brandon Vera in the first round via ref stoppage (strikes). Vera was upset post-fight at the stoppage but Werdum had a full mount and Vera wasn't striking back, even though he was defending most of Werdum's punches.
-Martin Kampmann defeated Jorge Rivera by submission (choke) in the first round.
-Matt Wiman defeated Thiago Tavares by knockout in the second round.
-Kevin Burns defeated Roan Carneiro by triangle choke submission in the second round.
-Luis Cane defeated Jason Lambert by knockout in the first round.
-Paul Taylor defeated Jess Liaudin by split decision.
-Antoni Hardonk defeated Eddie Sanchez by knockout in the second round.
