It's live World Extreme Cagefighting. It's Wednesday night. It's three titles on the line...let's do it!
Manny Tapia vs. Antonio Banuelos (bantams) - I remember Banuelos from one of the Tapout shows as Chuck Liddell's housemate...the Tapia name and fighting just go hand-in-hand, don't they?...Tapia wins under bizarre conditions as the two battled three
somewhat bland rounds and ended in up in a split decision. However, two minutes after it was announced, the New Mexico Athletic Commission said that one of the judge's cards should have read 29-28 for your winner, Tapia. Of course, we have no explanation from our broadcasters. Very odd.
Bantamweight Championship: Chase Beebe (c) vs. Miguel Torres - I always like when a camera pan of the crowd shows lots of fans dressed as empty seats. WEC ain't big in New Mexico yet, I guess...Torres puts on a jiu-jitsu clinic in dominating Beebe to win the title via reverse choke in the first round. According to guest broadcaster Urijah Faber, it's all about the 'dirty moustache' and the 'power of the mullet' that Torres is rocking. Sweet!
Hiroyuki Takaya vs. Leonard Garcia (featherweight) - Takaya is making his WEC debut which elicits random boos from the crowd. Guess they don't like the Japanese...Garcia wins rather quickly with a knockout after missing on some wild, looping shots...good quick bout.
Lightweight Championship: Rob McCullough (c) vs. Jamie Varner - These guys look like giants compared to the smaller guys we've seen all night...Varner shocks ever
yone by catching the champ with some hard shots midway through the 3rd round to win the title by ref stoppage. Varner bloodied McCullough in his unrelenting barrage, helping what had been a very uneventful fight up to that point...Varner doesn't seem to be a crowd favorite for some reason, getting some post-fight boos. My guess is we'll see a rematch in the spring.
Welterweight Championship: Carlos Condit (c) vs. Carlo Prater - Condit (seen here) certainly fits his nickname of the "Natural Born Killer" and has a very marketable attitude. How much longer before he gets the call-up to the UFC?...looks like the venue has finally filled up a bit for the hometown boy Condit...Prater puts up a fight for a few minutes and fought off a tight guillotine, but Condit was determined to finish this off and made Prater tap to another guillotine to successfully defend his belt. Who's left for this guy?
Overall, a decent night of WEC action. They need a few more notable names to really complete these cards (Faber, Pulver, etc.). McCullough and Condit are on that next level, but need some true ring wars to elicit an emotional tie from average MMA fans.![]()
